In the much-anticipated season opener at the Shriners College Showdown held at Globe Life Field, Arlington, Texas, the Oregon Ducks demonstrated resilience and strategic prowess to clinch a 4-2 victory over the Oklahoma Sooners. The match, unfolding on a crisp Friday evening, saw both teams eager to set a positive tone for the 2024 season.
The game was a tight affair from the outset, with the Ducks managing to pull ahead early, establishing a 1-0 lead in the first inning and extending it to 2-0 by the third. However, the Sooners showed their mettle, drawing level in the third inning thanks to vital contributions from Easton Carmichael and Kendall Pettis. Their efforts tied the game at 2-2, setting the stage for a nail-biting continuation.
Oklahoma's starting pitcher, left-hander Braden Davis, put in a commendable performance, allowing just two runs (one earned) on three hits over five innings, alongside seven strikeouts. His efforts kept the Sooners in contention, but the turning point came in the later stages of the game.
Reliever Malachi Witherspoon initially kept Oregon at bay with two strong innings. However, the Ducks' strategic play in the eighth inning, coupled with a moment of brilliance, allowed them to load the bases with no outs. A crucial double play did give the Sooners a glimmer of hope, but Oregon capitalized on the situation, scoring two runs to take a decisive 4-2 lead.
Despite Oklahoma's attempts to mount a late comeback, Oregon's closer, Michael Freund, sealed the game with a flawless ninth inning, striking out two and ensuring a Ducks' victory.
The Sooners, while facing an early setback, showcased a promising blend of skill and determination. With 13 returning letter winners and 26 newcomers, Oklahoma's blend of experience and fresh talent is poised for growth and success in the upcoming games against high-ranking opponents like Tennessee and Nebraska.
